Underwriting strength

Scottish Widows have over 17 years’ experience in online underwriting and rule development. This has allowed us to develop an interactive rules set to give you a high point of sale decision rate. If we do need further evidence, our underwriters and case managers will work with you to get this as quickly as possible.

Our commitment to your clients

We’re committed to giving your clients instant decisions and access to immediate cover for their peace of mind. In order for you to better set expectations with your clients and save time with wasted applications we’ve also developed a number of tools to make it easier for you to recommend the best cover options based on their individual circumstances.

Our underwriting outcome tool gives an indicative decision pre-application for some of the most commonly disclosed illnesses and conditions based on your clients individual circumstances.

We aim to offer Total Permanent Disability (TPD) and Premium Protection (PP) on an Own Occupation basis where possible. Our Definition of Disability tool allows you to find out whether we can offer your clients this based on their current occupation.

Simple but comprehensive Critical Illness definitions

We strive to make our critical illness definitions easy for your clients to understand, but also supply comprehensive cover, focused where it matters most . We’ve made several changes to our critical illness definitions over the last year in support of this approach:

  • One simple, clear additional payment for cancer in situ requiring surgery
  • Combined Alzheimer’s and Dementia definitions
  • Removed blanket drug and alcohol exclusions from 5 conditions.
